Comments

1. Microsoft Office on the Mac not accessible by VoiceOver.

2. PDF documents can only be viewed by VoiceOver using Preview on the Mac.

3. Word documents can be read by Textedit or Pages on the Mac..

4. Files can be transferred via iTunes via USB cable or via a wireless network using FTP to an iOS device. I.e. this is how a user would transfer Daisy books.

5. Preview on the Mac a great way to listen to audio files on the fly (I.e. doesn't open up iTunes to play the file).

6. Can read email attachments in iOS and Pages or other third party apps do allow the accessing and reading of txt/doc files as well (which will work with VoiceOver)

7. No suitable typing tutor for a screen reader user on the Mac as yet. However, can get audio mp3 typing practise files from Vision Australia to play in iTunes and practise keyboarding whilst listening (remembering that F8 can be used to stop and start playback of the mp3 file).

8. If requiring a video magnifier (CCTV), investigate the use of a digital microscope which can perform a similar function at a much lower cost.

9. Print to text scanning (OCr) recommended to use Iris Pro with a flat-bed scanner.

10. More and more assistive technology companies producing mac and iOS applications. iOS very popular. Can hardly listen to an assistive technology podcast without an Apple product being mentioned. Most calls on the Vision Australia Adaptive Technology Help desk concerning Apple: is How do I use? rather than: its not working?
